Theatre Under the Stars

Theatre Under the Stars

It can be challenging to recreate the magic of a beloved movie musical on stage, but the new version of SEVEN BRIDES FOR SEVEN BROTHERS has found the right formula for balancing artistic success and box office appeal for many regional theatres across the country and internationally.

Now available in a new version, updated in 2007 from the incarnation seen on Broadway in 1982, the Tony Award Nominated SEVEN BRIDES FOR SEVEN BROTHERS has a book by Lawrence Kasha and David Landay, music by Gene de Paul, and lyrics by Johnny Mercer with new songs by Al Kasha and Joel Hirschhorn. This lively dance show is adapted from the MGM film (which is in turn based on “The Sobbin’ Women” by Stephen Vincent Benet, and inspired by the Roman myth of the abduction of the Sabine women).  Originally choreographed by the genius of Michael Kidd.

A romantic comedy with a twist, Millie is a young bride living in the 1850s Oregon wilderness whose plan to civilize and marry off her six rowdy brothers-in-law to ensure the success of her own marriage backfires when the brothers kidnap six women from a neighboring town to be their brides. Bursting with the rambunctious energy of the original film, SEVEN BRIDES FOR SEVEN BROTHERS is all boisterous fun and romance that hearkens back to the glory days of the movie musical.

According to the BBC News survey listing the Top 10 Most Popular Musicals of All Time, and SEVEN BRIDES FOR SEVEN BROTHERS earned the #3 spot (behind Les Mis and Phantom).  A full synopsis can be found on the MTI show page here.

Paper Mill Playhouse - SEVEN BRIDES FOR SEVEN BROTHERS (2007)

Paper Mill Playhouse

A favorite in the MTI catalogue for over 25 years, SEVEN BRIDES FOR SEVEN BROTHERS was revised by the authors for a 2007 co-production between Theatre Under the Stars in Houston, TX, North Shore Music Theatre in Beverly, MA, Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn, NJ., and Theatre of the Stars in Atlanta, GA. When Paper Mill presented SEVEN BRIDES FOR SEVEN BROTHERS in April of 2007, CurtainUp called it “a terrific show for the whole family to enjoy” and Talkin’ Broadway exclaimed that the production was an opportunity to “luxuriate in the aura of delight which earned Paper Mill the largest subscriber base of any regional theatre in America.”

The same production then went on to have a successful run at the 5th Avenue Theatre in Seattle, WA. The Seattle Times gave the show a glowing review, calling it “a real barnburner.” As was noted of the productions in the other cities, the opportunities for great dance numbers paired with the rousing score makes this show a "delight for audiences."

This season, it was produced at Drury Lane Theatre in Chicago, IL, where it ended its “unbelievably entertaining” run in December 2010.

It is now our privilege to offer this exciting new version of SEVEN BRIDES FOR SEVEN BROTHERS to everyone.
