Atlantic HS Atlantic High School Theatre Department

Atlantic High School opened in 1994, chartering Thespian Troupe #5340 in August of that year. The theatre program includes beginning and upper level courses in acting, drama, musical theatre and comprehensive theatre arts. An audition-only class, STAGEWORKS, provides ensemble, production company experience for upper level students. In 2003, the school will implement a mandatory HUMANITIES course for all incoming arts students, exposing them to the historical development of dance, drama, music and art, unifying the arts experience. Atlantic's Unified Arts program integrates dance, drama and music in the production process of musical theatre.

Music Theatre International has played a significant role in that process. Two MTI representatives presented workshops in musical theatre and choreography for teachers, and have served as consultants in the development of musical theatre at the school and within the county (Volusia) and state (Florida). The two most successful Unified Arts musicals have been Annie (2000) and Little Shop of Horrors (2002). Students at Atlantic annually participate in regional and state drama, dance and music (instrumental and choral) festivals and competitions.
