SARAH MCGRAW

Performance Bio Sarah McGraw started her career at the Ohio Light Opera as a young singer for five seasons of repertory theatre, singing such roles as Yum-Yum in The Mikado, Phyllis in Iolanthe & Casilda in The Gondoliers. Happily, she had begun to realize her life-long dream of musical theatre on the professional stage to which her theatrical father had introduced her in early childhood. After receiving her B.A. and Masters degrees in theatre while studying voice & dance, she set out to perform at regional theatres across the country in such roles as Sarah in Guys & Dolls, Grace in Annie,Guinevere in Camelot, Julie in Showboat, Eliza in My Fair Lady & in Rodger’s & Hammerstein’s Cinderella, as the title role, & as Laurey in Oklahoma! After moving to New York City & finding an agent, Sarah embarked on a touring career which took her to Europe, the British Isles and South America performing lead roles in long runs such as The Mistress in Evita, Maria in West Side Story and Christine in Phantom of The Opera. Most recently she appeared at the Capitol Theatre in Columbus, Ohio playing the Soprano Role in Side By Side by Sondheim, and as Renee in Spotlight on Broadway. Just as her father before her, Sarah’s career turned to directing. She soon found herself helming such professional productions as Brigadoon & Carousel. She has also directed shows which include a New York production of the female version of The Odd Couple by Neil Simon & the operetta, Cox & Box. This past fall she directed Beauty & the Beast for Ingomar Acts of God. Sarah is married to a wonderfully supportive husband, Scott, whom she met in NYC & who has helped make it possible for her to continue to sustain a career in the theatre. Scott and Sarah live in Wexford & have two children, Helen, 9 and Logan, 5. Directing Biography for Sarah McGraw Sarah McGraw was lucky enough to have a father who in his career was a university professor, director, and administrator, so that she could see first hand & at a very young age, what theatrical directing was all about. Even before she began her performance career after high school, she went to Ireland with her dad as stage manager for a production of The Owl & the Pussycat that he was bringing to the Dundalk Theatre Festival. Her first big project was a full-scale production at Miami University, where for her graduate degree, she directed F.C. Burnand & Arthur Sullivan’s Cox & Box. After years of singing professionally in Gilbert and Sullivan operettas, this seemed a logical first choice for the young director to tackle. While getting her degree at Miami, she taught 4 classes of Acting For the Non-Major as part of her graduate assistantship. While in New York, in between performance projects, Sarah directed the female version of The Odd Couple by Neil Simon. After moving to Pennsylvania, she was hired to direct at the Ohio Light Opera, where she had performed years before. Over two summers with the company, Sarah directed two big book musicals, Carousel & Brigadoon to much acclaim. She has also directed five Broadway revues, which have included scenes from over 30 Broadway musicals. Sarah is the director for North Allegheny's spring musical. Over the past three years she has directed productions of Oklahoma!, Bye-Bye Birdie and Beauty and the Beast. Her current directing projects include her studio's fall musical, Seussical, Jr. and an original production called Set Me Free at Ingomar. Teaching Bio Sarah first taught acting as a graduate assistant in the theatre department at Miami Unviversity. She is now an instructor and sole proprietor of the Wexford Acting Studio where she has 70 students in her classes. The studio is entering its third year of operation in the fall, when they will be presenting their fall musical, Seussical, Jr. This summer Sarah will be teaching acting classes at the Chatham University Eden Hall Farm Summer Music and Arts Day Camps in June and July.
