SIDE 1

FLORA
The Queen is right to be afraid, you know. All the magic in the world won't keep little Aurora safe.

MERRYWEATHER
But what else can we do?

FAUNA
Hmm... What about no magic?

MERRYWEATHER
What?!?

FAUNA
Maleficent knows it's our job to protect Aurora with our magic, and that's what she'll be looking for. So, why don't we take the Princess to the old woodcutter's cottage in the forest and raise her using no magic at all?

MERRYWEATHER
But a princess in a cottage? Princesses are supposed to live in castles.

FAUNA
She won't be a princess! She'll be Briar Rose, our little peasant girl!

FLORA
(getting the idea)
Then on her sixteenth birthday, we'll tell her the truth and return her to the palace, safe and sound.

MERRYWEATHER
Briar Rose? Living in the woods? And no magic? For sixteen years?

FAUNA
(calming MERRYWEATHER down)
Come on, it will be fun!

SIDE 2

(The GOONS run off with MALEFICENT, cackling. The scene shifts to the woodcutter's cottage in the forest. The FAIRIES peruse a big book.)

MERRYWEATHER
At last, Briar Rose's sixteenth birthday has arrived!

FLORA
What about this dress for a birthday surprise?

MERRYWEATHER
Oh, that looks difficult... Are you sure we can't use our magic yet?

FAUNA
Come now, Merryweather. Surely you can wait one more day!

BRIAR ROSE
(offstage)
Aunties? Where are you?

FAUNA
Shh! Hide it! Here comes the birthday girl now!

BRIAR ROSE
And what are you all up to?

MERRYWEATHER
Up to?

FLORA
Up to?

MERRYWEATHER
We want you to... pick some berries.

FLORA
That's it! Berries.

BRIAR ROSE
Berries? But I picked berries yesterday.

FAUNA
Well, then - find a nice, big dandelion and make a wish!

BRIAR ROSE
Wish?

MERRYWEATHER
That's right, dear, for today is your lucky day--

(FAUNA cuts off MERRYWEATHER and pushes BRIAR ROSE out the door.)

FAUNA
Off you go, Rose!

BRIAR ROSE
But--

FAUNA
Goodbye!

FLORA, MERRYWEATHER
Goodbye!

BRIAR ROSE
Goodbye.
(to herself)
Hmm, they're acting funny.
(shrugs)
But at least it's a beautiful day!
(picks a dandelion)
I wish...
(cheerfully)
I wish I knew what my Aunties were up to...
(thoughtfully)
I wish they would tell me about my mother and father...
(sadly)
And I wish I weren't so lonely sometimes...
