Shows by Women. For Women.

Shows by Women. For Women.

In honor of Women's History Month, we are putting the spotlight on this sampling of shows - written by women, for women. As there are many more such shows in our catalogue, we hope this serves as a starting point to celebrate the women of musical theatre and explore their bold, joyful storytelling.

9 to 5 The Musical

Featuring a Tony-nominated score by Dolly Parton and a witty book by the film's screenwriter Patricia Resnick, 9 to 5  is an undeniably upbeat show about frienship, standing up for what's right, and making a change. Pushed to the boiling point, three female coworkers concoct a plan to get even with the sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot they call their boss. In a hilarious turn of events, Violet, Judy and Doralee live out their wildest fantasy – giving their boss the boot!

Beautiful: The Carole King Musical

Before she was hit-maker Carole King — she was Carole Klein, a spunky, young songwriter from Brooklyn with a unique voice. A Tony® and Grammy® Award-winning musical phenomenon, Beautiful tells the story of a girl who became King with the songs you remember and a story you'll never forget.

Mean Girls High School Version

You're invited to sit with the Plastics in Mean Girls High School Version! This fiercely hilarious musical contains the comedic genius of book writer Tina Fey (30 Rock), lyricist Nell Benjamin (Legally Blonde) and composer Jeff Richmond (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt). With strong female roles, this "Fearless" musical explores the pressures that young women face and declares "So here's my right finger to 'how girls should behave'"!

Renascence

Embark on a poetic journey in Renascence. Renascence is a theatrical exploration of identity and artistry through the poems of Pulitzer Prize-winning, Edna St. Vincent Millay, featuring music by Carmel Dean (music director for If/Then and American Idiot on Broadway), and a book by Tony nominee Dick Scanlan. Follow the lauded poet's quest for self-discovery and artistic renown.

She Persisted: The Musical

Fourth-grader Naomi's field trip to a Women's History Museum turns into a time travel adventure where she encounters inspirational women who have overcome barriers and made waves throughout U.S. history. Featuring music by Deborah Wicks La Puma (Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed), She Persisted, The Musical is adapted from the best-selling book She Persisted: 13 American Women Who Changed the World written by Chelsea Clinton, illustrated by Alexandra Boiger and published by Philomel Books.
