I'm looking for a show for the theatre department at my high school that will have very broad appeal and a large cast. I am in the midst of trying to build the program both in the school and in the community. Can you recommend something that has great music and a decent book and message? I feel like I SHOULD do Grease but my heart's not in it...

"Dear Edwina (Junior)" ... take a look. Great music, large cast, and loads of fun. Check out the vids here, and on youtube.

HONK! has a nice message, large cast, and can be designed on a dime. INTO THE WOODS would be another example--though the score can challenge. THE MUSIC MAN is a great high school show and features many actors. BREAK A LEG! :)

Yes.. Honk! was great fun as well. If only there was a one-act TYA version (hey MTI... hint hint!!) :o)

Hey Caitlin, MTI has been working on a series of blog posts called "Choosing Your High School's Musical". Check out the articles that have been released so far (featuring a variety of shows, and getting into the logistics of cast size, score, plot, community involvement, etc). And stay tuned for some more articles that will be coming your way very soon. If you feel like you need more personalized help, feel free to get in touch with your MTI licensing agent!

Hairspray seems to have been popular recently. Its book is cheesy, but in a campy, fun kind of way. Or, if your community isn't against you guys going a more religious route, Godspell's always a good choice; flexibile cast size, great ensemble roles to show off your talent, a fun structure, and the best part is that it gives the director a lot of creative freedom to play. That show, all in all, is an artist's playground, which is why I love it so much. I'm sure there are more, and I'll post them as I think of them. Hope you find a good show to go with!
