Many years ago someone donated a bunch of makeup to our theatre department. It is time that this make up finds its way to the garbage cans. I ahve some money in the budget for new makeup but don't really know where to start. Should I invest in stage makeup? Where do people find good prices? Should I take my cast into a store and color match? Or do they sell general kits that cover a collection of skin tones? Does cover girl work just as well for half the price? Any advice and weblinks would be helpful.Jen.

Regular over-the-counter makeup works well for most productions and roles...it really depends on your house size. I would recommend buying waterproof/smudge-proof when possible to keep the makeup placed on the face and not on your costumes!! Powder is also a great investment.
I recently bought a small individual kit for character makeup through Ben Nye. It's is great for age/character roles, but can look heavy on the face if used as base in a small theatre. Your students could each get one or you could buy a larger, more complete kit. They offer base cream in a variety of skin tones.
