Hop Back to Ancient Greece with THE FROGS -- Now Fully Available!

logo_200x200_000283The setting: Ancient Greece.  The time: now.  With the Peloponnesian War showing no signs of stopping and humankind becoming increasingly complacent, Dionysis, Greek god of wine, knows exactly what will save humanity: the writings of George Bernard Shaw.  Dionysis, along with his slave Xanthias, journey into the underworld to bring back the famous playwright.  Legendary hero Herakles, the boatman Charon, rulers of the Underworld Persephone and Pluto, a Greek chorus, a giant frog, and a showdown between Shaw and Shakespeare all culminate in a hilarious loose adaptation of the play by Aristophanes.

The team behind A FUNNY THING HAPPENED AT ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM takes on the ancient world to rousing success yet again!  Stephen Sondheim provides a score that is appropriately witty and heartfelt - particularly with Dionysis' moving remembrance of his wife, Ariadne.  Burt Shevelove deftly updates the ancient play while staying true to its slapstick, freewheeling humor.  This most recent version, first seen at Lincoln Center in 2004, includes a revised book by actor Nathan Lane (who starred as Dionysis), as well as six new Sondheim songs.  THE FROGS is a great way to showcase comedic talent in its two lead roles, and the ensemble has ample opportunity to shine, given its amount of singing, dancing, and acrobatics - and a frog ballet!  THE FROGS is an offbeat addition to any season that will leave audiences laughing - and with a newfound appreciation for the power of theatre.
