Remembering Jeffrey Lane

After decades of gracing the stage and television with wit and punchlines galore, award-winning MTI author, writer, showrunner and producer Jeffrey Lane passed away on May 20, 2026 at age 71.

As a book writer, Lane partnered with composer David Yazbek on Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown. With both musicals, Lane took on the task of translating vibrant stories from the big screen to the stage.

A zany romp about con artists in the French Riviera, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels opened on Broadway in 2005, starring John Lithgow, Norbert Leo Butz, and Sherie Rene Scott. Lane's work for Dirty Rotten Scoundrels earned him both Tony Award and Drama Desk nominations, as well as the Drama League Award for Best Musical. The show garnered ten Tony nominations and ran for 627 performances, closing in September 2006. Two national tours followed, as well as a West End run and UK tour.

Based on the 1988 Pedro Almodóvar film, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown made its Broadway debut in 2010 with a star-studded cast that included Patti LuPone, Laura Benanti, Danny Burstein, Brian Stokes Mitchell, and Sherie Rene Scott. The production was nominated for three Tony Awards and six Drama Desk Awards.

Known for such television programs as Mad About You, Ryan's Hope, Lou Grant, Cagney & Lacey, The AFI Life Achievement Awards, The Tony Awards (1987 and '88 broadcasts), The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd, and the miniseries The Murder of Mary Phagan, Lane was the winner of five Emmy Awards, three Writers Guild Awards, two Peabody Awards, a Golden Globe and the Christopher Award.

For the hit sitcom Mad About You, Lane worked both as showrunner and an executive producer. Starring Helen Hunt and Paul Reiser, the show ran for seven seasons from 1992 until 1999. An 8th season aired in 2019.

We will miss Jeffrey Lane's humor and are grateful that he has left us a legacy of laughter.
