SIR ARTHUR SEYMOUR SULLIVAN was the first holder of the Mendelssohn scholarship at the Royal Academy of Music. His principal ambition was to be a serious composer -- thus the success of his collaboration with Gilbert did not satisfy him. Despite many serious compositions (the oratorios such as _x001c_ The Golden Legend_x001d_ and _x001c_ Kenilworth,_x001d_ and the grand opera _x001c_ Ivanhoe_x001d_ ), only the operettas remain popular, and two of his songs (_x001c_ Onward Christian Soldiers_x001d_ and _x001c_ The Lost Chord_x001d_ ) continue to be sung
