Aladdin, Jr. or Aladdin KIDS

Which production is more suitable for a more mature group of young actors? I am hoping to direct Aladdin at a middle school, and I would prefer the script that is more challenging.Typically, how much do rights and rental fees cost?

Beauty and the Beast- transformation scene

I am directing Beauty and the Beast, Jr. and we were planning on using fog machines to do the transformation scene, but were informed that we were not allowed due to fire codes. So, we are back to square one. We were going to go with a blackout and a spotlight on Belle reacting to the Beast- but we need to get the prince on stage. Any suggestions?? The only other idea I found online was to use blinders to shock the audience. While this is a great idea, I am not sure how many we would need, etc.

Favorite JTF 2011 Moments?

I was just wondering what everyone's favorite moment or event was from this year's Junior Theatre Festival? My favorite moment occurred the first day during lunch break. Kids were starting to gather in their groups in the hall outside the main ballroom. I'm not quite sure how it started, but one group piped up singing showtunes and before long, three or four different groups had joined in (myself included) and were having this huge musical theatre jam session in the middle of the hall! It was during Seasons of Love (ironic, really) that I realized this was a great reminder that the theatre community is so much bigger than the company that you work with.

What's with all the MIC's

We all probably do it, peruse through the assorted YouTube offerings, while we begin our planning and prep-work for a show. On more than one occasion I find myself wondering..."Why do all these shows insist on using microphones?"Whether it's the hand held types being passed from cast member to cast member, those on stands at the front edge of the stages, or the assortment of lavaliers etc that cause the leads to "blare out" while the supporting characters aren't heard at all. It seems that near every school (that chooses to film and post their work) has some type of wireless MIC setup to "enhance" their productions. Are they really needed? Or is this simply a case of "trying to look like the pro's" gone a little too far? For me.. they tend to detract from the performances rather than enhance them. What's your take?

Wireless Headset Mics

I direct a new school musical theater program--grades 4-8. We would like to start acquiring our own wireless headset mics, since they cost as much to rent as to buy. Any advice on what I should buy?
