Introducing: The Stephen Schwartz Collection

By Music Theatre International on September 24, 2025

The lyricist and composer behind numerous hit musicals including Pippin, Godspell, Wicked, The Prince of Egypt, Children of Eden, and more, Stephen Schwartz has defied gravity on the charts for decades with his works reaching global renown. Join us in celebrating this musical legend through his vast catalog of shows available for licensing.

In the The Digital Journal, Schwartz noted that "there is something about the music, and that we all resonate together as human beings. It helps us to bridge differences and bring us together." His commitment to fostering new talent, philanthropy, and creating impactful music led him to receiving the Isabelle Stevenson Tony Award in 2015.

Stephen Schwartz’s film credits include Wicked: Part 1 and The Prince of Egypt; he also collaborated with Alan Menken on the Disney films Pocahontas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Enchanted. Schwartz has been inducted into the Theatre Hall of Fame, the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In addition to the Isabelle Stevenson Tony Award, he holds three Academy Awards and four Grammy Awards. We are thrilled to announce our Stephen Schwartz Collection to commemorate his accomplishments.

Pippin

Pippin holds four 2013 Tony Awards including Best Musical Revival and features a truly unforgettable score. Heir to the Frankish throne, the young prince Pippin is in search of happiness and fulfillment. Pippin yearns for power and disposes of his father, King Charles, for his own gain. Through trials and tribulations, Pippin finds that happiness lies in the moments that happen every day. The universal messaging behind this show leaves a lasting impact on all audiences.

Godspell

Godspell was the first major musical theatre offering from Stephen Schwartz and remains a staple for theatres of all sizes. The premise is both simple and profound; a comedic troupe comes together to tell the parables and teachings of Jesus Christ, taking us on a journey through hope, devastation, and redemption. Characterized by an interactive and engaging style, Godspell contains chart-topping songs that continue to touch audiences today. With small technical demands and a minimal cast size, Godspell is available for licensing as a full-length musical, a 2012 revival version, and the 60-minute JR. version.

The Prince of Egypt

Featuring Schwartz’s Academy Award-winning song, “When You Believe,” and based on the Oscar Award-winning DreamWorks Animation film, The Prince of Egypt is a sweeping epic tale of two brothers who follow two different paths. Moses embarks on a journey to free the Hebrew people, putting him at odds against his brother, Ramses, the new Pharaoh of Egypt. Both face a destiny that will change history forever. This musical offers many creative design opportunities and important lessons.

Children of Eden

From musical theatre greats, Stephen Schwartz and John Caird, Children of Eden takes on the story of Adam, Eve, Noah, and the “Father” who created them as they each deal with the cataclysmic actions of their children. At its core, Children of Eden delivers an inspiring message that the hardest part of love is letting go. Available as a full-length version, JR. version, and concert selections, Children of Eden is a great show for faith-based groups looking for a large-scale production featuring sweeping music.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame

Based on Victor Hugo's gotchic novel and featuring the Academy Award-nominated score, as well as new songs by Stephen Schwartz and Alan Menken, The Hunchback of Notre Dame is an epic story of love, justice, and what it means to be a hero. The story follows Quasimodo, the deformed bell-ringer of the Notre Dame cathedral, who longs to be "Out There" while observing all of Paris from above. Held captive by his caretaker, the archdeacon Dom Claude Frollo, he escapes and experiences Paris for the first time. The Hunchback of Notre Dame features a compelling score and powerful story.

My Son Pinocchio: Geppetto’s Musical Tale

In Disney’s My Son Pinocchio: Geppetto’s Musical Tale, a little wooden puppet is brought to life by the toymaker Geppetto. When Geppetto struggles to make his son “the perfect boy,” he loses him to a gang of Roustabouts. Faced with never seeing Pinocchio again, he discovers the real love and the joys of being a father. Filled with a cast of lively characters and magical heartwarming numbers, including “When You Wish upon a Star” and “I’ve Got No Strings,” My Son Pinocchio is a family-friendly adventure that is available in both its full-length version and as a JR. version.

Captain Louie TYA

Captain Louie (TYA) is a fresh and touching story about friendship and taking on a new town. Louie has just moved and is nervous about making new friends. When Louie’s imagination sparks, he returns to his old neighborhood to spend Halloween with some of his old pals. But as Louie is introduced to the kids in his new reality, he discovers that making new friends might not be so scary after all. Captain Louie is also available to license as a JR. version.

Rags

Stephen Schwartz, Charles Strouse (Annie), and Joseph Stein (Fiddler on the Roof) join forces in Rags, a musical about immigrants in pursuit of the American Dream. Rebecca Hershkowitz and her young son arrive in America in 1910, yearning for a better life. When confronted with exploitation and bigotry, they realize that America isn’t the paradise that they had hoped for. Undeterred, they build a new home with a community of immigrants.

Working

Working paints a vivid portrait of the workers that we take for granted, sharing the experiences of the schoolteacher, the phone operator, the waitress, and more. An exploration of 26 people from all walks of life, Working dives into their inner lives. With songs by Stephen Schwartz, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Craig Carnelia, James Taylor, Micki Grant, and more, this musical remains authentic and resonant.

The Baker’s Wife

The Baker’s Wife is adapted from the French film about the baker Aimable and his wife, Genevieve. After Genevieve is swept away by a young gigolo, Aimable refuses to bake until she returns to him. The villagers band together to bring Aimable and Genieve back together and restore the bread supply. One of Stephen Schwartz’s lesser-known titles showcases a strong ensemble of featured roles, a tuneful score (including the standard "Meadowlark"), and a witty book, making it a “hidden gem” in our catalog.

Snapshots

Snapshots is a musical scrapbook of Stephen Schwartz’s most beloved songs from Wicked, Godspell, Pippin, and more. Sue has packed her bags and has written her farewell note to leave her husband, Dan. As she’s saying her final goodbye to their home, Dan arrives home early from work. The two embark on a journey through their past, reliving their memories and rediscovering their love for one another. With a small cast, minimal set, and a score set to some of Stephen Schwartz’s most iconic songs, Snapshots is ideal for small theatres or black box venues.
